Healthcare and Medtech
Leading the way in healthcare innovation
As part of ambitious plans to transform Taunton’s Musgrove hospital, Somerset’s NHS Foundation Trust has received £87 million in government funding. This landmark investment in the healthcare sector, together with the innovative private and public sector research partnerships underway, signifies the exceptional opportunities for innovation, collaboration, growth and advancement in the region’s Healthcare and Medtech sectors.
Set out by the UK Government, ‘HealthTech’ is one of the three key priority sectors in the region, and there are significant opportunities for growth and investment.
The sector offers a number of partnership opportunities for businesses working in the healthcare sector. One example of a successful partnership is the Joint Venture between Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at Musgrove Park and the independent sector-led Rutherford Diagnostics Ltd, backed by Philips. The joint venture is developing one of the first community diagnostics centres in the UK in the heart of Taunton.
There are also excellent research opportunities for businesses. Two Russell Group universities are within easy reach of Taunton. The University of Exeter and University of Bristol, and both are leading the way in the fields of healthcare research, including dentistry and population health sciences.
Working with Plymouth and Exeter and the Academic Health Science Network, a regional healthcare technopole is being created, presenting further opportunities for businesses to thrive. Plus, Somerset West and Taunton Council and Sedgemoor District Council are working together to develop a centre of excellence in Social Care.
A centre for the region’s clinical and academic excellence, and with so much investment and innovation happening, it’s no wonder that the district is attracting leading businesses such as Amphenol Thermometrics and Novanta.
